TORONTO—Unifor forestry members, their families and their communities will hold events in more than 35 communities from coast to coast on Friday, Oct. 16 as part of the union's Forestry National Day of Action.
Events will range from barbecues on mill grounds to marches and rallies with members, family and friends, and information handouts at mill gates. Workers will call on all three levels of government to work together with workers, employers and communities on a shared vision for a stronger, more sustainable forestry sector.
A perfect storm of trade and economic pressures are pushing Canada's forestry workplaces to the brink, and many of the operations at risk are the last mills standing in their regions. Unifor is calling on the federal government to implement the recommendations of the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force's final report, released in April 2026. The union's priorities include a national industrial strategy for forestry, a federal industrial transformation fund tied to modernization, and immediate transition supports for workers. Unifor is also calling on forestry employers to invest in modernizing and transforming their operations.
