More than 45 Unifor Local 1990 members gathered in Calgary on July 6–9 to discuss the upcoming Alberta referendum. Organized by the Membership Mobilization and Political Action Department, the training session reviewed all of the steps in member to member campaigns and aimed to provide members with new skills they would need to grow the Pro-Canada, Pro-Immigrant movement.
"Education workers are not sitting out this process. They know what's at stake and they're prepared to do the work," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "The referendum is a dangerous distraction from working peoples' priorities, like good jobs and strengthening Alberta's public services."
Previous activism experience in the room varied, but all of the participants were engaged in the workshops, sharing experiences about how the referendum campaign has taken shape in their communities so far. Participants also practiced tactics for communicating the negative impacts of separation.
"I'm really proud of the initiative taken by Local 1990 and other locals who have stepped up," said Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. "The grassroots movement to fightback against the anti-immigrant tone of the referendum is growing. Workers are going to have their voices heard."
