Unifor is pleased to welcome 90 workers at Bell Media in Toronto and Ottawa, who work on the national news desk, the news channel, and CTVnews.ca.

“We are thrilled to welcome these talented journalists and media workers to our union,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

“This comes at a time when our country and the world face so much political and economic uncertainty. A more robust media sector is the cornerstone of democracy that we need now more than ever.”

Now represented by Unifor Local 79-M, the new unit includes schedulers, writers, producers, resource desk, researchers, editors, and correspondents/reporters.

The organizing drive began at the beginning of this year, with members voting to join between Nov. 12 to 19. Workers decided to unionize to win greater job protection and improved wages.

“In a sector that is struggling from harassment, abuse, layoffs and shortfalls in funding, joining Unifor is a move that builds worker power,” said Unifor Organizing Director Justin Gniposky. “There is power in numbers.”
