GODERICH—Despite Unifor’s efforts to reach a fair settlement, Compass Minerals refuses to bargain unless miners accept all of its concessions.
“Mandatory overtime is not safe and cutting pension benefits is not in the best interests of workers,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Miners make this mine work, and they deserve a fair deal.”
Compass Minerals has been publicly claiming since the strike began that it is working in the interests of local families and the community, but its private behaviour reveals different objectives, says Unifor.
“Compass Minerals says one thing and does another,” said Glenn Sonier, the Unifor National Representative bargaining for Local 16-O. “Behind closed doors, they have tabled extremely aggressive demands and have been, so far, totally inflexible.”
Local 16-O has been on strike since April 27.
