A rousing closing panel discussion set out the work ahead of Unifor members and government of all levels in the coming weeks and months.

Workers from automotive, airlines, fisheries and long-term care sectors united in a conversation on current issues in Canada’s public services, industrial strategies and income security programs.

The panel was hosted by Unifor Research Director Angelo DiCaro. Shane Wark, Assistant to the National President, introduced the live-streamed event with a frank framing of Canada’s economic position.

“We had serious challenges even before the pandemic. With the onset of COVID, things got even worse - very quickly,” said Wark. “We have been through economic downturns and crises before, and we know what often comes next.  The austerity agenda – cuts to social programs, public services, and outright attacks on workers rights, unions and the broader labour movement. This time, it must be different. It must be better. It must be an agenda for working people.”

Earlier this summer, Unifor launched the Build Back Better campaign, which includes our road map for a fair, inclusive and resilient economic recovery.

The campaign has already seen results, most recently in sweeping changed to Canada’s Employment Insurance program.

Colin James, Unifor Local 222 President made the argument clear by stating, “We need governments that are bold enough to invest in workers.”
