Members of Unifor Local 444 working at Casino Point Edward in Sarnia have given their bargaining team a strong strike mandate in the face of pension demands that have led to the lockout of workers a three other casinos across Ontario.

“This vote sends a clear signal to OLG and our locked out sisters and brothers that the workers at Point Edward support Unifor’s determination to stand up for the pensions of its members,” Local 444 President Dino Chiodo said.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming has locked out members of three other Unifor locals – Local 504 in Brantford, Local 252 at Woodbine and Local 598 in Sudbury – after refusing to include pension protections in collective agreements if the casinos are privatized.

OLG is making the same demand at Point Edward, where the workers are negotiating their first contract.

With 175 of 220 members voting, 85 per cent voted to give their bargaining committee the right to call a strike if necessary. Local 444 also represents 2,700 members at Caesars, Windsor.
