AJAX—Workers represented by Unifor Local 1090 at Casino Ajax have voted 99 per cent in favour of strike action if a fair settlement cannot be reached.

“Unifor members are pivotal to the success of Casino Ajax,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “They deserve a fair contract and decent wages.”

The union is seeking a commitment from Great Canadian Gaming that Unifor members at the Casino Ajax can transfer to the proposed Durham Live facility in Pickering under their existing collective agreement. Local 1090 is also seeking fair compensation, as wages have only increased 1.75 percent over the last eight years.

“This strike mandate sends a strong, clear message to the employer that Casino Ajax members are behind their bargaining committee,” said Corey Dalton, President of Local 1090.

Local 1090 and Casino Ajax will be bargaining simultaneously with Great Blue Heron (Port Perry), Woodbine Security (Toronto), Elements Casino Mohawk (Campbellville), and Elements Casino Brantford (Brantford). All of the facilities are represented by Unifor, with all collective agreements set to expire on July 23 at 12:01 a.m.

“A strike is almost always a last resort, but Great Canadian Gaming has left us few options,” said Roy McDonald, Chairperson of Local 1090’s Ajax unit. “If the company makes serious offers that respect the work done by Unifor members, I’m confident we can negotiate a new contract without an interruption in service to our valued customers.”

Unifor Local 1090 represents 225 members at Casino Ajax working at slot machines, food and beverage, cashiers, guest services, environmental services, shuttles, maintenance, and the kitchen.
