Members of Unifor Local 4600 have ratified a new collective agreement with significant increases to shift and weekend premiums, overtime provisions, wages, as well as the option to join a defined benefit pension plan.
“This agreement reflects the respect these workers deserve for the essential frontline support they provide every single day,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. “Homeless shelter workers face immense pressures on the job, and achieving wage parity with Halifax is an important step toward fairness and recognition of their vital contributions.”
The union was also successful in negotiating Unifor Paid Education Leave into the newly ratified collective agreement.
The 10 workers at Cape Breton Community Housing (Homeless Shelter) on Townsend Street in Sydney voted overwhelmingly in favour of ratification.
“Reaching this ratification is a success for our members at Local 4600,” said Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray. “Staff at the homeless shelter work around the clock to provide shelter and support to the growing number of people experiencing homelessness in Cape Breton.”
During the ratification meeting, members also elected a new unit chair and shop steward and committed to Unifor education in the Sydney office in the spring.
"I’m very proud of the work the committee did this round and look forward to their growing union involvement," said Local 4600 President Jamie Pollock. “This contract strengthens the foundation for our members and supports long-term stability at the shelter."
