More than 50 workers at Cancarb in Medicine Hat have joined Unifor after a certification vote on February 26 and 27, 2024. They will join the amalgamated Unifor Local 4050.

“We are thrilled to welcome Cancarb workers to Unifor,” said Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle. “We’re going to get to work right away on a contract to secure compensation and improve working conditions.”

The new members perform a wide variety of work in job classifications including electricians, millwrights, instrumentation technicians, various operators, lab technicians, and warehouse technicians.

Cancarb manufactures thermal carbon black, a product created during the thermal decomposition of natural gas. The Medicine Hat location provides production, quality control, packaging, marketing, and shipping of carbon black. Cancarb also has a waste heat recovery facility producing power attached to the carbon plant.
