Metro Vancouver and Victoria transit operators travelled to Seattle this month to pay their respects at the funeral of Shawn Yim, a King County Metro bus driver was fatally attacked while on the job. The Canadian delegation joined transit workers from across the region in a solemn display of solidarity and support for Yim’s grieving family and co-workers.

Unifor Local 333-BC President Stephen Bains helped co-ordinate the demonstration of cross-border solidarity as soon as he heard the tragic news.

“We knew we had to act. It was very important to our members that we send the strongest possible message that violence at work is never acceptable and that ‘an injury to one is an injury to all’,” said Bains. “The overwhelming support from transit locals and Unifor’s B.C. Regional Council helped make the trip a reality on short notice.”

The delegation’s journey to Seattle reflects a longstanding tradition of solidarity among transit workers. A similar trip was made in 1998 when another Seattle bus operator, Mark McLaughlin, was murdered on the job.

“Our members understand the unique challenges and dangers of this work, and we stand with our union siblings in Seattle during this tragic time,” said Unifor Local 111 President Balbir Mann. “This loss reminds us how vital it is to keep fighting for safety in transit workplaces.”

Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle emphasized the importance of workplace safety in honouring the memory of workers like Yim. “Transit operators deserve robust protections to ensure they can do their jobs without fear of violence,” said McGarrigle. “We remain committed to advocating for stronger safety measures that prioritize the well-being of transit workers and the communities they serve.”
