MOOSE JAW, Nov. 7, 2016 /CNW/ - The lives of more Moose Jaw residents have been turned upside down by layoffs, thanks to Premier Brad Wall. Twenty-one workers at SaskTel were given notice this afternoon.
"When will it stop? This is a vibrant community that suffers every time good jobs vanish," said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director. "There is no justification for moving this work away from Moose Jaw."
Unifor says that the Brad Wall government is attempting to close an office in Moose Jaw and move some of the work to Regina. The union, which represents workers at both locations and likely won't see its total membership shrink, supports keeping the jobs in Moose Jaw. The SaskTel layoffs follow layoffs at the Wakamow Valley Authority announced earlier this year.
"SaskTel offers a high quality public service to the people of Saskatchewan, and the Sask Party government needs to stop meddling in its affairs," said Warnock.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
