BELLEVILLE—Wage increases and benefits enhancements were part of a new collective agreement ratified today by a vote of Unifor Local 1839 members working at Belleville Transit.

“Local 1839 members have been serving Belleville on the front lines of the pandemic for two years and counting,” said Lana Payne, Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer. “They bargained hard for a fair contract and stood up to municipal ‘leaders’ who misled the public on multiple occasions.”

Transit workers will receive a 7.1 per cent wage increase over the lifetime of the four-year agreement and an additional $200 in vision coverage.

Local 1839 members voted unanimously to strike if necessary on April 1, 2022 but a tentative agreement was reached before the midnight deadline on March 31.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
