Unifor members at Battenfeld Grease are back on the job after ratifying a new collective agreement that puts an end to a lockout at the company's Titan Road facility in Toronto.
"I'm incredibly proud of our 14 members at Battenfield Grease who held the line and won a deal that respects the work they do and helps them keep pace with the rising cost of living," said Unifor National President Lana Payne.
The 14 Unifor Local 1459 members, who work as kettle operators, packagers, forklift operators and building maintenance staff, were locked out on July 21 after months of bargaining failed to produce a fair contract.
A tentative agreement was reached on Saturday, July 25, and members voted to ratify the deal on Monday, July 27. Workers returned to their jobs Tuesday morning.
The new agreement includes front-loaded yearly wage increases in the first and second years of the contract, and adds two lump-sum payments, one payable now and a second later in the life of the agreement.
"Our members here proved that a small, determined picket line can win a fair deal," said Samia Hashi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director. "Our union had their back every step of the way."
