January 4 is National Ribbon Skirt Day in Canada. The movement to recognize the importance of ribbon skirts to many Indigenous communities arose out of the experience of Cote First Nation youth Isabella Kulak, who was belittled by school staff in January 2021 for wearing a ribbon skirt to Kamsack Comprehensive Institute in Kamsack, Saskatchewan.

Thanks to the awareness raised about the cultural importance of ribbon skirts, Indigenous peoples are proudly and confidently wearing skirts as formal attire to celebrate important events and achievements.

This January 4, Unifor members who identify as Indigenous are encouraged to take photos of themselves wearing their ribbon skirts and share a message on social media about what skirts mean to you. Members are also encouraged to send their photos to @email to be shared in a collective album online.
