The Unifor Legal Department provides legal services to Unifor and its local unions across Canada. The Department’s core work involves litigation and advice in these areas:
Labour board applications, responses and interventions about bargaining rights, unfair labour practices, and duty of fair representation defence.
Complex and novel labour arbitrations.
Civil suits including picketing injunction cases, judicial reviews and appeals.
Bankruptcy, CCAA and other insolvency proceedings.
Human rights applications, responses and interventions.
Regulatory compliance.
Our lawyers sometimes participate in training of Unifor members, staff and leaders; draft policy papers, submissions and briefs; and contribute to strategic planning about legislation and policy.
Unifor is hiring one or more lawyers in Toronto. Ideal candidates will have acquired 3 to 5+ years of litigation experience by working for a law firm or another union. Membership (or eligibility for membership) in the Law Society of Ontario is required. Travel within Ontario and to other provinces in Canada will be required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated experience litigating and carrying litigation files (labour board, arbitration, human rights and/or other administrative tribunals)
Superior analytical and drafting skills
Strong advocacy and relationship-building skills
Knowledge of legislation and jurisprudence governing labour relations in various Canadian jurisdictions
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with short timelines
A valid driver’s license for attendance at in-person hearings
Current salary range depending on experience is up to $145,192.84 plus additional allowances, benefits and pension plan.
