Non-hiring and dismissal of senior workers: is it all about the money? By Dr. Pnina Alon-Shenker
Senior workers are particularly vulnerable to corporate restructuring and downsizing, and face significant challenges to reemployment. Nonhiring or dismissal of senior workers is sometimes motivated by ageism and ageist stereotypes (such as the belief that these workers are slower, less ambitious, flexible, or productive than younger workers). Recent studies have shown that even employers and human resources personnel, who value the experience and expertise of senior workers, are unlikely to hire or retain them.
