Members of Unifor Local 1090 working as security officers at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, formerly Casino Woodbine, were locked out at 12:01 a.m. on July 23.
The collective agreement between Unifor Local 1090 and Great Canadian Entertainment, owner of Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, expired on July 22, 2026.
Security officers ensure that all customers have a safe gaming environment and are a critical part of the casino’s operations.
The workers sought a wage increase to meet today’s high cost of living, and the company answered by locking them out.

Who is Great “Canadian” Entertainment?
If you ask the workers, they’re not so great, and definitely not Canadian.
Great “Canadian” Entertainment is privately owned by the Malta-based international gaming company Apollo Entertainment.
Apollo Entertainment benefits from its Canadian presence greatly, offshoring profits from at least 7 online gaming platforms in Ontario.
Is this international ownership affecting how the formerly charity-based company now approaches Canadian clients, and workers?
Well, in Ontario, Apollo Entertainment was fined $100,000 in 2023 for failing to meet Ontario’s responsible gambling requirements.
And today, it’s locked out the very people who are responsible for keeping patrons safe at Canada’s largest casino resort.
