FORT MCMURRAY—A new memorandum of understanding signed with Suncor will convert 300 temporary positions into permanent jobs by the end of 2024.

“Local 707-A has done great work to secure these additional good jobs by mutual agreement with the employer,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor Western Regional Director.

During the last several years, the union has been successful in converting 32 temporary positions into permanent jobs and the new MOU represents a significant milestone to secure additional permanent positions for Heavy Equipment Operators in the mine.

“This mine is a resource for all Albertans and all Canadians. It ought to provide good, union jobs that sustain our local community,” said Dirk Tolman, Unifor Local 707-A President.

Local Unit Vice Chair Ian Beaton, who was involved in the negotiations with Tolman, said Local 707-A will continue to stand up for the temporary employees who are not covered by the MOU: “Our job is not done. We will continue to advocate for the remaining members working in temporary positions.”

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
