If you are a Unifor member on our mailing list, you should have received an email this week with a link to the union’s survey on pensions. Part of an initiative to ensure Unifor members have access to a reliable retirement plan, the survey aims to evaluate member interest in a Unifor-driven plan.
“We’ve known for some time that pension benefits differ greatly from employer to employer and at the same time we know that retirement security is a top priority for our membership,” said Jerry Dias, National President. “Unifor is taking the initiative to create better options around pensions, with our members’ input, we expect it to be a significant step forward in building a more adequate and secure retirement for all Unifor members and retirees.”
When Unifor was created in 2013, members identified retirement security as a top priority. Last year in Port Elgin, the union brought together members from across the country for our inaugural Pension Summit. Following the Summit, we collaborated with retirement security firm Common Wealth, and focused on building a retirement security action plan under the direction of the National Executive Board.
A crucial part of this action plan is hearing from members about your needs and challenges when it comes to retirement security, and how Unifor can best ensure those needs are met.
“The Pensions and Benefits Department has a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw from and our partnership with Common Wealth has only deepened our understanding of where Canadians’ expectations and needs for retirement stand,” said Corey Vermey, Director of Pensions and Benefits. “But where the rubber meets the road is really with the membership, so this survey is a crucial step in offering a retirement plan tuned to the needs of today’s workers.”
