TORONTO, Aug. 12, 2014 /CNW/ - Striking Bombardier workers from Thunder Bay are headed to Toronto to put pressure on the TTC not to accept vehicles assembled by replacement workers and to encourage municipal and provincial governments to urge the employer to reconsider their attack on workers' pensions.
The workers are responsible for building the Toronto Rocket subway cars, bi-level coaches for GO Transit, as well as the new TTC streetcars that are scheduled to be released on August 31.
More than 900 workers at Bombardier's Thunder Bay facility, members of Unifor local 1075, have been on strike since July 14. They are striking to protect pensions and retiree benefits as well as good jobs that were created here in Ontario by public investment in transit projects.
Actions are planned at the following locations and times:
- Tuesday, August 12
- 3:30-5:30pm, Spadina TTC station
- 3:30-5:30pm, Spadina TTC station
- Wednesday, August 13
- 5:30-7:30am and 2:00-3:30pm, Bombardier Aerospace facility, 123 Garratt Blvd., North York
- 8-10am, Wilson TTC station
- Thursday, August 14
- 10-11am, TTC head office and TTC Davisville station, 1900 Yonge Street
- 11am-12:30pm, GO Transit head office, 20 Bay Street
Bombardier workers will be available at each of these events to speak to the media.
Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, with more than 305 000 members across the country.
