CALGARY—The Rachel Notley government’s loan guarantee to the Calgary-based firm planning to build a new oil upgrading facility is a smart move, says Unifor.

“It is sound public policy to help launch projects that add value—and therefore long-term jobs—in our natural resource sector,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “It is a sound investment for the people of Alberta.”

According to the company planning the facility, Value Creation Inc., the upgrader will process 77,500 barrels of bitumen per day into medium-grade oil for processing at North American refineries.

“Upgrading and refining is something that Unifor has long-supported and we’ve worked closely with the government to make progress towards a more diverse energy sector that creates more jobs,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor’s Western Regional Director. “The NDP government should be commended for following through on their vision to make natural resources go farther for Albertans.”
