OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor has negotiated a tentative collective agreement with Brinks Canada in Ottawa, one day ahead of a legal strike date.
"This deal came after some long hours of talks with the company, but with the members' support for the bargaining team we were able to get a deal without a strike," said Andre Desjardins, president of Unifor Local 4266, which represents Brinks workers in Ottawa.
The deal reached Monday night came after a day of mediation between Unifor Local 4266 and Brinks, ahead of a strike or lockout date of October 1. The union had a 99 per cent strike mandate from its 130 members.
Details of the new contract will be released after the ratification vote on Sunday, October 5. The local's bargaining committee is recommending that members approve the deal.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers, including more than 2,000 in the armoured car industry. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union merged.
