Members lined up bright and early on July 9 for a day of roller coasters, hot dogs, burgers and mountain selfies at Unifor’s Member Appreciation Day at Canada’s Wonderland in Vaughan, Ont.

This is the sixth year Unifor has organized a day at the amusement park (taking a pause during the pandemic), where members can connect with each other, let their hair down and enjoy a summer’s outing with their families. The event sold out after more than 5,500 tickets were purchased this year.

“A trip to Canada’s Wonderland is a Unifor annual tradition,” said Unifor National Secretary-Treasurer Len Poirier. “There’s no better way to get to meet other members, locals and enjoy the rides and atmosphere with your family.”

Early bird Unifor members who arrived at 9 a.m. were able to access the park an hour earlier than the general public.

Poirier welcomed the thousands of members and families.

“We want everyone to have a wonderful time here,” he said. “This is the time for our members to enjoy and socialize with each other and really enjoy the day. This is an opportunity to bring our families together with our union family to build bonds and memories. . Make sure you tell everyone else, so we’ll make this bigger and better every year.”

A number of local presidents also addressed the lunch crowd throughout the afternoon, thanking the union and participants for coming out and showing support for the picnic, including Unifor Local 1285 President Vito Beato, Local 707 President Mark Scriberas and Local 1701 Treasurer Wayne Williams.

“We honestly could not have asked for a better day,” said Shinade Allder, Unifor Local 6005 President and Ontario Regional Council Chair.

Members were encouraged to wear Unifor swag at the park.

“It’s important to show solidarity of our union wherever we are,” said John Aman, Unifor Senior Director overseeing the Recreational Department.

“Our union and its Recreation department are giving back and utilizing the ability to get our members a deep discount while they are having fun with family, friends, and colleagues. The reviews have been great, fun times were had by all.”
