TORONTO, July 31, 2014 /CNW/ - Canada's largest media union, Unifor, will be available to comment following a ruling from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) on Rogers Broadcasting's request to water down programming commitments at OMNI and City TV stations in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario. A ruling is expected July 31 or August 1.
"If Rogers gets what it wants we are going to see more reductions in ethnic programming and local news," said Unifor Media Sector Director Howard Law. "Before Rogers gets anything from the CRTC by pleading poverty, they should have to submit to an in-depth audit of their claims."
Rogers Broadcasting applied for a renewal of their City and OMNI licences in the fall of 2013. Unifor testified before the Commission in April 2014.
Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. With more than 305,000 members, Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector.
