Tracey Ramsey with other concerned members at TPP townhall
A town hall on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, organized by  Local 222 and Oshawa MPP Jennifer French, drew representatives from all levels of government to speak to concerned members about the inherent dangers of the trade deal.

Tracey Ramsey, former auto worker and current NDP MP, provided a detailed presentation outlining the potential impact of the TPP on a variety of sectors and on Canadian society as a whole.

“Labour, environmental activists, aboriginals, seniors, none of these people were in the room when the TPP was negotiated,” said Ramsey. “These groups never had a chance to see how wide-sweeping the impact would be.”

In her role as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on International Trade, Ramsey is travelling the country for public hearings to determine if the TPP is in the best interests of Canadians. Information obtained at the hearings, and from written submissions, will be used to create a report that will be presented in the House of Commons.

Ontario MPP Jennifer French warned the TPP could have a devastating impact on communities like Oshawa. “Experts predict that the agreement will result in the loss of 60,000 jobs in Canada, a third of which will be in the auto sector alone,” said French. “It's time for the Liberal government to take a stand and defend the interests of all Canadians before it's too late.”

“There is a difference between free trade and fair trade,” Oshawa Mayor John Henry told those gathered. “The TPP isn’t fair trade.”

The TPP hearings will continue in Saint John, Charlottetown, St. John’s and Halifax in early October 2016, exact dates and locations to be released. Written submissions will accepted by the Standing Committee on International Trade at @email  until Oct. 31, 2016.
