Unifor Atlantic Director Lana Payne will be speaking this afternoon before the Standing Committee on Natural Resources hearings into Bill C-5, which proposes a new safety regime for the offshore oil and gas industry.
The industry has been hit with tragedy over the years, including the sinking of the Ocean Ranger drill rig in February 1982, killing 84 workers, and the crash of Cougar helicopter Flight 491 in March 2009, killing 17 workers.
While Unifor welcomes the proposed safety regime in Bill C-5, Unifor will today be calling for a strong and independent safety and environmental authority for the offshore oil and gas industry, similar to those in place in Norway, Australia and the United Kingdom.
