November 21, 2017 Winnipeg—Unifor says that Brian Pallister’s conservative government is a “one trick pony” ideologically committed to only one idea: public service cuts. “From healthcare to transit, public service cuts hurt Manitobans,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Shifting costs on to the backs of working families is not a solution, it is the problem.” Unifor says that despite a growing public backlash to painful healthcare cuts and closures, Pallister hasn’t budged from his conservative ideological belief that tax cuts are his government’s primary objective. As a result, the throne speech was almost silent on the needs of northern communities and Churchill’s rail transportation crisis. The throne speech also made several commitments to reducing government’s oversight powers, masked in language like “cutting red tape”, “modernizing regulations”, and inventing new “licensing regimes”. Unifor warns that government oversight and regulation is important for keeping people safe and the economy fair. “We all rely on laws and regulations to make sure that fairness is enforced and public health is protected,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor’s Western Regional Director.
