October 8, 2020 ST. JOHN’S–Striking Dominion workers have formed a human solidarity chain at Kevin’s No Frills in St. John’s, a partner of Dominion parent company Loblaw Companies Limited. “Today’s strike action is part of our ongoing campaign to get Loblaw to return to the bargaining table with a fair offer,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias. “Our members will be asking No Frills customers to show support for the workers by shopping elsewhere today.” The human chain is connected by six-foot long ‘ropes of hope’, to allow the workers to physically distance during the information picket. The workers are distributing an information flyer while encouraging the public to support the strike by taking their grocery dollars elsewhere. A petition is also available at unifor.org/customerschoice. The Dominion workers, on strike since August 22, 2020, continue to demand a living wage and full-time jobs from the company, which classifies more than 80% of the workers as part-time and pays more than half minimum wage. “Over the past six weeks Loblaw has continued to sell its products at No Frills and Shoppers Drug Mart. While the company continues to rake in increased profits during the pandemic, it also continues to refuse to pay its frontline workers a living wage,” said Unifor 597 President Carolyn Wrice. “The workers have received tremendous support from the public during this strike and today we are asking them to join us in sending a message to Loblaw and its Chairman Galen Weston.” Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector and represents 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
