Unifor Retired Workers from across Canada remain active in retirement, through participation in their local Retired Worker Chapters and geographical Retired Worker area councils.

This activism includes volunteer work within communities, as well as support for local and national campaigns and activities. Retired Worker chapters and area councils provide retirees with an opportunity to stay connected with the ongoing work of the union and the labour movement, fostering both a professional network and a social opportunity for meaningful interaction with like-minded individuals.

“Retirees are an essential part of our union”, said Les MacDonald, Retired Workers Council Chair and National Executive Board member. “Locals are encouraged to reach out to their retirees, stay in contact with them and help to form a Retired Workers Chapter or become part of an area council.”

If there is an area council in your community, encourage your retiree chapter and members to join, so we can grow solidarity.

Many of the Unifor Retired Workers Chapters and area councils meet monthly, discussing reports from locals while welcoming speakers from within the community.

The annual Retired Workers Council is held in Port Elgin, Ont. over the Labour Day week. Along with hosting Labour Day activities, the council brings together participants from across the country. At the council, members share ideas and actions, debate resolutions, develop action plans and discuss recommendations for our union.

Unifor retirees often provide picket line and rally support and retirees are often politically active in campaigns and lobbying politicians.

There are Retired Workers area councils across most of Southern Ontario, as well as in B.C., Quebec, Manitoba, Halifax and Newfoundland and Labrador. There are chapters in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Alberta, and B.C.
