OTTAWA, Nov. 13, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor is returning to the bargaining table with the RA Centre on Friday, November 14, after many months of stagnating negotiations and dropping morale. Unifor Local 4270 represents the 55 unionized staff members at the RA Centre, who have been without a collective agreement since May.
Members have voted 85 per cent in favour of a strike, if necessary.
"Our members are responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of RA members while they're at the centre," said Mike Armstrong, Unifor national representative. "Without them, the centre would cease to function. How long should our members have to work without a collective agreement though?"
While Unifor members at RA would like to be optimistic about getting a new deal, there is no indication from RA management that this will happen any time soon, said Armstrong. He said the delays are unnecessary and not helpful for operation of the RA Centre.
The union is now in a legal strike position and will determine a deadline depending on how negotiations unfold.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
