Every year, Unifor marks December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, with a call to action to make our workplaces and communities safer.
“Our union works to eliminate violence against women wherever we see it,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “From increasing awareness of the problems, to advocating for paid domestic violence leave and supporting women’s shelters to protect survivors, our union is doing everything it can to stop this blight on our society.”
This year marks 30 years since the 13 engineering students and one worker were murdered at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989. This day is also an opportunity to reflect on all the missing and murdered Indigenous women, trans women, and all women whose lives have been harmed or lost to gender-based violence.
“Gender-based violence is a problem we all must confront, head on, and work every single day to stop,” said Lisa Kelly, Unifor Women’s Department Director. “Our union has been successful on many fronts. It is our work to get at the very root of gender-based inequality. We can’t stop until the violence stops.”
