FORT MCMURRAY, AB, June 30, 2014 /CNW/ - Unifor congratulates federal NDP candidate Lori McDaniel for her contribution to the Fort McMurray—Athabasca by-election. McDaniel campaigned for reforms to the Temporary Foreign Worker program and challenged Stephen Harper's reckless natural resource policies.

"I'm so proud of Lori's campaign. She is a very strong candidate who raised issues that working people in Fort McMurray are concerned about," said Jerry Dias, Unifor's National President. "Her experience working in the Oilsands means that she understands the importance of sustainable natural resource development in Alberta."

McDaniel works as a heavy equipment operator at Suncor and serves as an elected health and safety representative for Unifor Local 707A. Like many of Fort McMurray's residents, she moved from the East Coast in search of employment.

Unifor has been a vocal opponent of the Harper Conservatives' attempts to reduce Canadians' rights in the workplace, including legislation making it harder to unionize and take democratic job action in federally-regulated sectors.

Unifor was founded Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. With more than 305,000 members, Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector.
