VANCOUVER, Nov. 7, 2014 /CNW/ - Strong economic gains and benefits for retirees form the basis of a three-year collective agreement ratified today by Unifor Local 4275, the union representing 425 staff at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

"Having a union in the hotel sector makes an incredible difference. Unifor hotel workers continue to earn greater wages and benefits than the non-union sector and they have more say over their working conditions," said Kevin Quinn, Unifor Local 4275 President.

The agreement includes no concessions and compensation increases totalling 2.5%, 2.75% and 3%. The new collective agreement increases retirement contributions, introduces funding for retiree benefits, doubles the current severance provisions, and opens up more opportunity for early retirement.

"Unifor represents thousands of hospitality workers and these are family-supporting jobs. Hotel workers deserve fair compensation today and retirement with dignity. This deal is an important step forward as we continue our drive to raise standards in the hotel and restaurant sector," said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor's BC Area Director and lead negotiator for the talks. "The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is currently up for sale and this agreement provides a solid foundation for new ownership to build on."

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 305,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged. Unifor works to protect its members and play a leadership role in building thriving, safe workplaces and a strong economy so all workers in Canada have a good job, a decent standard of living and greater equality.
