Expression of condolences and support for Toronto

Unifor joins the residents of Toronto in sharing the grief for those killed and injured in the horrific van attack on April 23. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and our gratitude to the witnesses and first responders, some of which were Unifor members, who selflessly provided aid and comfort.

It now appears that this shocking assault may have been motivated by misogynist ideology. Police have confirmed that most of the victims were women, those killed include a female college student, a single mother and a grandmother.

This week’s horrific incident further highlights the need for increased education on gender based violence and additional support of programs that empower girls and women.

As evidenced by the public notes of condolence in Toronto, the sorrow for the lives lost and support for those who suffered injury in this appalling act crosses all gender, racial, cultural and economic divides. When tragic events happen in our community we need to lean on each other.  If you or someone you know is struggling with grief, fear, anxiety, or anger, please reach out.

Together we are united in our shock and grief; let us also be united in our vow to shine a light on misogyny and sexism, and condemn violence in all its forms.

The #TorontoStrongFund has been created to raising funds to help support victims, their families, first responders and others seriously impacted by the incident. Donations can be made here.
