Victoria—The bargaining committee for Fairmont Empress workers have reached a tentative agreement with the employer.
“I’m very proud of the solidarity shown by the entire membership in the hotel,” said Stu Shields, Unifor National Representative. “The bargaining committee achieved all of our goals and we’re very satisfied with the progress in this contract.”
Among other gains, the union achieved fair wage increases, won some workload relief for housekeepers, and enshrined the position of a Woman’s Advocate.
Unifor Local 4276 represents almost 500 Empress workers in housekeeping, culinary, grounds keeping, serving, guest relations, maintenance, and engineering.
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
