Brad Wall has no democratic mandate for privatization

REGINA, Aug. 24, 2016 /CNW/ - Premier Brad Wall's recent comments about SaskTel contradict his public statements during the election about keeping the profitable crown corporation in public hands.

"If Brad Wall wants to strip the people of Saskatchewan of their most valuable asset, he should have told the truth during the election," said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director. "There is simply no benefit from giving away a public asset that gives so much direct benefit to every single person in Saskatchewan."

An independent analysis prepared for SaskTel earlier in 2016 demonstrated that the company is still as competitive as ever and won't experience significant risk should the pending sale of MTS to Bell Canada be approved by the federal government. Unifor says the report shows that SaskTel should continue to have the lowest prices and best coverage in Saskatchewan.

"Selling off SaskTel is tantamount to theft from the people of this province," said Warnock. "Brad Wall has no right to treat our great public assets like used appliances at a garage sale."

Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
