TORONTO, April 14, 2015 /CNW/ - Unifor and the Canadian Labour Congress will host a forum Thursday for experts and interested groups to share their perspectives on the Harper government's proposed anti-terror legislation Bill C-51.
"This law restricts the right of Canadians to express their legitimate opposition to government policies and actions," Unifor National President Jerry Dias said. "With an election this year, we are bringing together civic leaders and scholars to share their perspectives on this dangerous bill."
The forum, from 1pm to 4pm this Thursday at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto, will include leaders from labour, First Nations, Muslim groups and progressive organizations from across Canada to discuss the challenges presented by Bill C-51 and how to respond to them.
To get the discussion started, there will be presentations from Paul Cavalluzzo (chief counsel to the Maher Arar inquiry), Sukanya Pillay from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Roch Tassé from the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group and Kent Roach from the University of Toronto.
There will also be opening remarks by Dias and CLC President Hassan Yussuff.
All presenters will be available for media interviews, as well as discussion participants Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation Chief Donny Morris and Toronto lawyer and diversity consultant Thamina Jaferi.
