THE PAS— Unifor Local 1403 members have voted 91.3 per cent in favour of striking if the company doesn’t take major concessions off the table.
“Let us be perfectly clear: we will not accept concessions at Canadian Kraft,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “Unifor members at Canadian Kraft have earned a fair contract.”
Local 1403 represents 235 mill workers at Canadian Kraft Paper (CKP). Talks have been underway for three months but the union says the company refuses to consider improving the working conditions at the mill or help wages keep pace with inflation.
“Mill workers in The Pas have already made enough sacrifices to keep this plant open,” said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Regional Director. “Unifor members are integral to the success of Canadian Kraft and deserve safe working conditions with fair wages.”
Unifor Local 432, which represents the supervisors at the mill, has been steadfast in its support for a fair contract: “We appreciate the support of Local 432. Solidarity among workers will be important to securing a fair contract,” said Unifor Local 1403 President Joel Fouillard.
