On the evening of October 29, an armoured truck robbery occurred in the Montreal neighbourhood of Rosemont.
Montreal police say one or two armed and masked suspects handcuffed the Garda employees and then stole a sack of money from the truck. The Garda employees are members of Le Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique.
Unifor and Le Syndicat canadien de la fonction publique, two unions that represent armoured truck drivers and armoured car guards, have been calling for improved safety standards for more than a year.
Unifor has called for a national task force into safety standards in the industry, and an end to two-person crews. In a landmark ruling released earlier this year, two-person armoured car crews were declared unsafe by a federal health and safety officer after an exhaustive investigation.
Industry statistics show that 70 per cent of armoured car robberies in the last 10 years have been against two-person crews.
Unifor stands in solidarity with those workers victimized by this crime, their families, and the SCFP.
