Baby toys, building blocks, sleds and even a drone were among the toys donated the annual Paramedic toy and food drive in Alliston – all collected from workers at the local Honda plant and its supplier facilities.
“At this time of year, it is important to give back to the community and show that we have the interests of those most in need in mind,” said Danny McBride, lead organizer for Unifor at Honda.
The toys and food were collected at the Unifor Organizing office in Alliston, which was officially opened in the fall as a hub for organizing workers at Honda and other workplaces in the area, including suppliers to Honda.
Part of the purpose of the office is to become part of the community, and to help out with local needs, McBride said. The food and toy drive, which has been coordinated by Simcoe County Paramedics for several years now, was a good fit.
Unifor ran ads on local radio encouraging people to donate, and also collected toys and food from workers at Honda and Simcoe Parts Services in Alliston, F & P Manufacturing in nearby Tottenham, as well as from Unifor staff and members in the area.
The Alliston office also donated poinsettias to old age homes and care facilities in the area as part of a promotion during the holiday season by the local radio station.
